As much as we all may want to see Charismatic roll to a convincing victory as the first Triple Crown winner in 21 years, we must go out on a limb here and question just how good was the Preakness victory. Charismatic made a wonderful move to take over and win the Preakness, but it came as the suicidal early pace that went 4 furlongs in 45.1 collapsed, and the final time was nothing to brag about. Menifee should be right there chasing him at the end again, but the question is who might be infront of those two?
Although Silverbulletday may not have been running against the boys or top competition, her times in the Black Eyed Susan run at Pimlico the day before the Preakness was much better. If she'd finished the final half furlong in a modest 7 seconds she'd have been about 3 to 5 lengths ahead of Charismatic -- and she was ridden out.
From the Peter Pan run at Belmont the following weekend we have Best of Luck at 6 to 1 morning line odds with a very good time for 9 furlongs in the mud, but picking up some weight here, and just 2 1/2 lengths back was Lemon Drop Kid who is 20 to 1 on the morning line.
Another long shot with a chance might be Pineaff from far back, who turned in two good times at the Blue Grass and Illinois Derby. He is listed at 30 to 1 on the morning line. He may be peaking for this.
Sentiment says CHARISMATIC but our figures prefer SILVERBULLETDAY with several others capable of the upset and interesting odds.
