2002 Triple Crown Comments
It's Triple Crown time again, and to keep you up to date with what is
happening with the primary contenders keep an eye on this page which
will be updated throughout the Triple Crown season.
Prep Races To Watch
First, what races are the ones to watch? In our opinion the main
contenders are likely to emerge from the following races:
April 6th ........... The Santa Anita Derby (Santa Anita)
April 13th .......... Arkansas Derby (Oaklawn)
April 13th .......... Blue Grass Stakes (Keeneland)
April 13th .......... Wood Memorial (Aqueduct)
The Kentucky Derby winner should come from a decent, though not necessarily
a winning, effort in any one of these races. Pay
attention to developing form however because often the actual result from
the prep race can be misleading. Remember that the trainers are trying
to aim the best effort for the key race which is the Derby, not the prep race.
And there is always the factor of racing luck.
Horses to Watch
With one month to go, here are the horses we think are the main contenders
with their tentative FTS power ratings. The FTS ratings will
be finally adjusted following the running of the prep races. At this point
it looks like a small edge goes to Harlan's Holiday off an
impressive win in the Florida Derby. Another to keep an eye on is
Tempera who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillie event last
year, and has been working well. With many suggesting this is a sub-standard
crop of colts this year, maybe the fillie has a chance.
